If you're spending time on the island of Rhodes and looking for things to do, you absolutely have to take a boat trip to Symi Island. Just an hour by ferry, Symi is a picture-perfect town with pastel houses stacked on the hillsides, sparkling turquoise water and colourful streets.

In this guide, I’ll share everything you need to know to plan the perfect day trip to Symi from Rhodes, including how to get there, what to do and the best photo spots.

How to Get to Symi Island from Rhodes?

To get to Symi Island from Rhodes, you'll have to take a ferry, which is easy and simple. Ferries run daily from Rhodes Mandraki Harbour and the journey takes around 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on the boat (our journey took roughly 80 minutes).

There are a few different ferry operators, but we personally chose this boat trip to Symi with Sebeco Lines.

It was actually cheaper to book the day trip through getyourguide, rather than buying the tickets directly from the ferry operator!

The boat left on time and it was a very smooth journey, and there were plenty of seats both inside and outside, we chose to sit in the air-conditioned section. It’s a good idea to book your tickets in advance, especially during the summer months when trips can fill up quickly.

Most ferries drop you off right in Ano Symi, the main harbour town on Symi, so you can start exploring as soon as you arrive. If you're doing a day trip, aim for an early ferry over and a late return to make the most of your time on the island.

How long do you need for a day trip to Symi Island?

We had around 4.5 hours of free time on the island, which was more than enough to wander around, take plenty of photos, enjoy a drink, have lunch and grab an ice cream before heading back.

Most ferry tours offer between 3.5 to 5 hours on Symi, depending on the schedule you choose. Even the shorter option gives you time to see the main sights and soak up the atmosphere, but if you want to take it slow or fit in a swim, aim for the longer stay.

Best Things to Do on a Day Trip to Symi Island

A day trip to Symi Island is fairly relaxed, as it's a small harbour town thats easy to explore on foot, so you can cover a lot without feeling rushed. Here are some of the best things to do:

1. Wander the Streets of Ano Symi

As soon as you arrive, you'll be greeted by the charming harbor town of Ano Symi, with its pastel-colored buildings lining the waterfront. Spend some time wandering the narrow lanes, exploring hidden stairways, and admiring the architecture.

There are plenty of little boutiques, cafes and shops selling local products like sea sponges, herbs and handmade soaps.

2. Go for a swim

If you’re visiting on a warm day and want a swim, there is a small section of beach by the Clock Tower, along with a few sunbeds (for a fee), or Paradeisos Beach is just a 20-minute walk from the harbor.

For something quieter, you can take a taxi or boat to Pedi Beach, which is a bit further but more secluded. Both have crystal-clear water, sunbeds and tavernas nearby.

There are also boat trips that include a stop at St George's Bay, which is a stunning beach on Symi Island with clear, turqoise water. If you like to swim and snorkel, consider booking a boat tour that includes a stop here.

3. Enjoy a Lunch by the Water

Symi has some great places to eat by the harbour, so it's the perfect place to grab lunch after exploring. There are lots of traditional tavernas, where you can try fresh seafood or greek dishes.

We ate at Fotaras, which had a great view from the seating area, but the food wasn't amazing. Some other popular restaurants on the water include Tavenera Haris and Pavone Cafe.

Best Photo Spots on Symi Island

Symi is incredibly photogenic, with its colorful buildings, charming streets, and scenic viewpoints. You could point your camera anywhere and it would look incredible, but here are a few photo spots that you cant miss:

1. White Steps Viewpoint (near the WWII Memorial)

Located next to the World War II Memorial is a white staircase, which leads up to a panoramic viewpoint looking over Symi island and the harbour. It's a stunning photo spot and provides a great vantage point, and the white staircase itself is even photogenic.
