Finland’s Lapland is home to some of the most unique accommodations in the world, including cosy glass igloos that let you watch the aurora borealis dance across the sky from the warmth of your bed.
If you’re anything like me, spending a night or two in the Lappish wilderness, surrounded by snow and stars, is on your bucket-list.
During our time in Lapland, we experienced three incredible igloo hotels, each offering something special, from adventurous activities to remote wilderness and unforgettable northern lights displays. Here are the 3 Lapland igloo hotels you need to experience this winter.
1. Best for Activities: Apukka Resort
Located just outside Rovaniemi, Apukka Resort is the perfect choice if you want to have a relaxing igloo stay with plenty of winter adventures. The resort offers a range of unique room types, from cosy glass igloos to larger two floor cabins, all designed to maximise your chances of seeing the northern lights.

We stayed in their incredible Kammi Suite, a split-level cabin with a cosy living area and kitchen downstairs and a comfortable bed under a glass roof on the second floor. We highly recommend this cabin, it was the perfect base to come back to after a day of snowy activities, with its arctic interior and a cosy fire.

What makes Apukka stand out is its endless list of activities in the resort. You can spend your days dog sledding with huskies, riding snowmobiles across frozen lakes, meeting reindeer or even trying a finnish sauna with an ice dip.

An incredible experience!
Since Apukka is just 15 minutes outside of Rovaniemi, you can also visit the city centre and iconic spots like Santa Claus Village, so you won't run out of things to do.

2. Best for Northern Lights: Northern Lights Village Levi
If your main goal is to witness the northern lights, Northern Lights Village Levi is hard to beat. Located near the popular ski resort of Levi, this hotel is perfectly positioned away from light pollution while still being easy to reach.

The resort offers two cabin types, the Aurora Cabin and Aurora Suite, with the suite being slightly bigger and more luxurious, with a private sauna. Both cabins feature laser-heated glass roofs that stay clear of snow and frost, giving you uninterrupted sky views all night long.

We stayed in the Aurora Suite, which was an unforgettable experience! The cabin was spacious, cosy and the private sauna was such a luxurious touch. We also had full board meals in their cosy restaurant, all of the food was delicious with plenty of options and local favourites (vegetarian too)!

Inside the Aurora Suite
Beyond the cabins and aurora viewing, the resort offers a range of winter activities, from reindeer and husky safaris to snowshoeing and skiing. You're also only 30 minutes outside of Levi, one of the best ski resorts in Lapland.

3. Best for Remote Wilderness: Syöte Igloo
For those seeking peace and seclusion, Syöte Igloo offers an unforgettable escape into the wilderness. Sitting on the Pikku-Syöte fell in the south of Lapland, this boutique glass igloo is surrounded by snowy forests and wilderness views, far from any light pollution.

The igloo itself is a cosy self-contained cabin, with a bathroom, kitchen and inviting bed under panoramic glass windows. It was actually one of our favourite cabins because of the attention to detail and cosiness.

Although the igloo is off-grid and remote, it's right by the ski resort Hotel Pikku-Syöte, so you have direct access to the slopes and can spend your days skiing or snowshoeing through untouched landscapes.

The intimate setting makes Syöte Igloo ideal for couples looking for a quiet romantic getaway.

Tips for Booking a Lapland Igloo Hotel
- Book 6-12 months in advance - Winter, especially December and the Christmas period, is peak season in Lapland. Igloos sell out quickly, so secure your dates early.
- Compare packages for the best value - Many hotels offer packages that include meals, activities and airport transfers. Bundling can save money compared to booking everything separately.
- Dress for Arctic conditions - Pack proper winter gear: thermal base layers, insulated boots, gloves and a good down jacket. Even if your igloo is warm, you’ll spend a lot of time outdoors.
- Stay at least 2-3 nights - The northern lights are unpredictable, so give yourself multiple chances to see them by booking a longer stay.
How much does it cost to stay in a Lapland igloo hotel?
Prices vary depending on the location, season and type of igloo. On average, you can expect to pay €500-€800 per night during winter. You'll find that its cheaper in early winter (late october - november) at around €300 per night.

Can you reach these hotels without a car?
Yes, most Lapland igloo hotels offer transfers from nearby airports or towns. Apukka Resort is just a short transfer from Rovaniemi Airport, while Northern Lights Village Levi can be reached via Kittilä Airport. Syöte Igloo is more remote, so it would be ideal to have a car, but transfers can be arranged.
Do igloo hotels guarantee seeing the northern lights?
Unfortunately, no hotel can guarantee an aurora display, as it depends on solar activity and weather conditions. However, staying in areas with minimal light pollution, like Levi and Iso-Syöte, and booking for several nights will give you the best chance.

Some hotels, including Northern Lights Village, even offer aurora alarms to alert you if the lights appear while you’re sleeping.
