Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, might not be the first destination that comes to mind when planning a European getaway, but it really is a hidded gem. Before our recent trip, we didn’t know much about the city.
However, when we were invited to experience Christmas in Vilnius, we quickly fell in love with its rich history, vibrant culture, and festive atmosphere.
If you’re planning a visit and searching for the perfect Vilnius travel guide, you’re in the right place. This four-day Vilnius itinerary is designed to help you find the best things to see in Vilnius, from its stunning Old Town to the quirky Republic of Užupis.

Day 1: Exploring Vilnius Old Town & Užupis
Morning: Vilnius Old Town
Start your day by exploring Vilnius Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its unique architecture and historical landmarks.
It’s one of the largest surviving mediaeval old towns in Northern Europe, with a unique mix of architectural styles, including Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Neoclassical.
As you wander through the cobblestone streets, don’t miss the Gates of Dawn and St. Anne’s Church, two of the city’s most significant religious sites.

Afternoon: Republic of Užupis + Paupys Market
In the afternoon, cross the Vilnia River into Užupis, the city’s bohemian district. Known as the “Republic of Užupis,” this quirky neighbourhood has its own constitution and is filled with street art, galleries, and cafes.

Make sure to check out the constitution written on a wall along one of the main streets, and the Angel of Užupis statue.
After, head to Paupys Market for lunch, a unique dining hall described as an ‘indoor urban jungle’, where you can try a variety of local and international cuisines.

Evening: Traditional Lithuanian Dinner at 14Horses
For dinner, indulge in traditional Lithuanian cuisine at 14Horses, with a Michelin Bib Gourmand award, it’s a highly recommended restaurant known for its modern take on local dishes. You can sample specialties like cepelinai (potato dumplings) or šaltibarščiai (cold beet soup) while relaxing in the warm, rustic atmosphere.

Day 2: Discover Vilnius’ street art, gardens and Lukiškės Prison
Morning: Street Art Walking Tour
Start your second day with a visit to Vilnius Open Gallery in the Loftas district, an old industrial estate that has been transformed into a vibrant graffiti art exhibition.

Talented local and international artists have turned Loftas into a canvas for their creativity, covering the walls of once-ordinary buildings with captivating works of art.
As you stroll through these neighbourhoods, you’ll discover colourful murals that reflect the city’s culture, history, and social commentary.

Afternoon: Relax in Bernardine Garden
After your morning of exploring street art, take a walk through Bernardine Garden, one of Vilnius’ most beautiful parks.
Located next to the Vilnia River and the Bernardine Monastery, this tranquil green space has manicured flower beds, fountains, and a small botanical garden, and is the perfect place for a picnic.
Evening: Lukiškės Prison Evening Tour
A must-do activity in Vilnius is an evening tour of Lukiškės Prison, a site steeped in history and eerie charm . Originally built in 1904, this former prison has housed various political prisoners and revolutionaries throughout its dark and storied past.


The prison closed in 2019, and much of it has been left untouched, preserving its haunting atmosphere. The tour offers a deep dive into the prison’s role in Lithuanian history, including its use during both World Wars and the Soviet era.
Now a cultural space, Lukiškės hosts art installations, concerts, and events, and was even a filming location for Stranger Things Season 4!

Day 3: Trakai Castle
Morning: Brunch at Pink & Yellow
Start the day with a delicious brunch at Pink & Yellow, an aesthetic and vibrant cafe in Vilnius known for its tapas style breakfast.

You can choose from sweet fluffy pancakes and banana bread, to savoury avocado toast and egg tacos, paired with freshly brewed coffee or a refreshing smoothie.
Afternoon: Trakai Castle
After brunch, take a short drive or bus ride to Trakai, a picturesque town located 40 minutes outside of Vilnius. Here you’ll find Trakai Castle, set on an island in the middle of Lake Galvė.
This fairy-tale-like castle, originally built in the 14th century, is one of Lithuania’s most iconic landmarks.


Explore the castle’s well-preserved interiors, which has a museum showcasing mediaeval artefacts and exhibits on Lithuanian history.
After touring the castle, wander around the lake, rent a paddleboat, or simply relax by the water. The serene surroundings and the castle’s reflection on the lake create a magical atmosphere, perfect for photography.
Trakai Tours
Evening: Dinner at Džiaugsmas
Return to Vilnius in the evening and dine at Džiaugsmas, one of the city’s most acclaimed restaurants with a Michelin star. Known for its modern Lithuanian cuisine, Džiaugsmas offers a menu that celebrates local ingredients with a contemporary twist.
Try dishes like smoked eel, roasted beetroot with goat cheese, and homemade bread, all prepared with excellent attention to detail.
Day 4: Exploring More of Vilnius
Morning: Cathedral Square and Gediminas Castle
Start your final day in Vilnius with a visit to Cathedral Square, the heart of the city and the home to Vilnius Cathedral, an impressive neoclassical building.
After exploring the cathedral, make your way up to Gediminas Castle, a symbol of Lithuania’s mediaeval past. You can hike up the hill or take the funicular, and enjoy panoramic views of the city from the top.

Afternoon: See Vilnius from Above in a Hot Air Balloon (Seasonal) or Visit the Museum of Illusions
In the afternoon, choose between two unique experiences depending on the season. If you’re visiting in the warmer months, don’t miss the opportunity to see Vilnius from above with a hot air balloon ride.
Vilnius is one of the few European capitals where ballooning over the city is allowed, offering breathtaking views of the city’s red rooftops, lush green parks, and winding rivers.

Hot Air Balloon Tours
If the weather isn’t suitable for ballooning, or if you prefer an indoor activity, visit the Museum of Illusions instead.
This interactive museum offers a fun and mind-bending experience with its collection of optical illusions, holograms, and immersive installations. It’s also worth a stop in the 2D Cafe, even just for a photo!

Evening: Christmas Market (if visiting in winter) + Dinner at Rosehip Vegan
If your visit falls during the holiday season, spend your final evening at the Vilnius Christmas Market in Cathedral Square.
The market is a festive wonderland of twinkling lights, handmade crafts, and seasonal treats, and is set around the main christmas tree they have every year. Wander around the stalls, sip on mulled wine, and soak in the magical atmosphere.

For dinner, head to Rosehip Vegan, a trendy restaurant known for its creative plant-based dishes. Even if you’re not vegan or vegetarian, this restaurant has a diverse menu that will impress you and leave you satisfied. We were so full we couldn’t even order dessert!
How to Get Around Vilnius in 4 days
